opinions and preferences interact with the structuring of social networks and groups to generate collective behaviors and social dynamics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keywords:<\/strong> computational social science, opinion dynamics, complex systems modeling, web-mining &amp; deep learning, cognitive science.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong> The formal modeling of social phenomena has known several interdisciplinary contributions since the founding work of John Nash on non-cooperative games with contributions from social psychology, sociology, cognitive economics or anthropology. Stylized theoretical models based on statistical physics and dynamical systems theory have addressed the central question of the articulation between individuals and the collective. These works, which formalized in a stylized way the concepts of opinions, norms and values, have only been confronted with real systems in a qualitative way, due to the lack of large-scale data on these phenomena.<\/p>\n<p>The accessibility of massive data made possible by online social networks has changed this situation. Thus, and despite questions about the social segmentation of users of these platforms, it is nevertheless possible to use them to address several questions concerning social dynamics. For example, it is possible to study the formation of consensus, or polarization around a topic of social interest or to evaluate the phenomena of rumor or fake news diffusion.<\/p>\n<p>This thesis project will aim at developing formalisms that can bridge different approaches to social modeling (game theory, statistical physics, dynamical systems, and complex networks) by integrating in a multilevel way the issues of opinion formation, values and norms, intrinsically linked to the personality of social actors, and the social structures in which they evolve (modeled as complex networks). In particular, we propose to study the dynamics of coupling between the processes of morphogenesis of the intrinsic properties of social actors and those of the interaction networks they form, through theoretical and empirical approaches.<\/p>\n<p>The person recruited for this project will be in charge of developing new formalisms for the study of opinion dynamics, at the interface between statistical physics, game theory, agent models, complex network modeling and data science. These models will be fed by knowledge from the main theories of the individual (cognitive sciences) and the social (sociology\/anthropology) and will be validated by relying on the solid mass of data and reconstructions from the macroscopes of the Institut des Syst\u00e8mes Complexes de Paris \u00cele-de-France (ISC-PIF) on topics such as French politics, climate and the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>This thesis is part of an interdisciplinary project funded by the 80PRIME call of the CNRS, which aims to better understand the long-term societal impacts of crises such as pandemics or global warming on our societies, by modeling the processes of collective attention, evolution of values and opinions and more globally, of change of interaction mode in society.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education and skills expected:<\/strong> Master&#8217;s degree in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or related. Mastery of programming languages allowing the realization of extensive simulations and the analysis of massive data. Des mod\u00e8les th\u00e9oriques stylis\u00e9s bas\u00e9s sur la physique statistique et la th\u00e9orie des syst\u00e8mes dynamiques, ont abord\u00e9 la question centrale de l&#8217;articulation entre individus et collectif. Ces travaux, qui ont formalis\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re stylis\u00e9e les concepts d&#8217;opinions, de normes et de valeurs, n\u2019ont \u00e9t\u00e9 confront\u00e9s aux syst\u00e8mes r\u00e9els que de fa\u00e7on qualitative, par manque de donn\u00e9es \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle sur ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019accessibilit\u00e9 aux donn\u00e9es massives permise par les r\u00e9seaux sociaux en ligne a chang\u00e9 la donne. Ainsi, et malgr\u00e9 les questionnements relatifs \u00e0 la segmentation sociale des utilisateurs de ces plateformes, il devient n\u00e9anmoins possible de les utiliser pour aborder plusieurs questions concernant des dynamiques sociales. Par exemple, il est possible d\u2019\u00e9tudier la formation de consensus, ou de polarisation autour d\u2019un sujet de d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat social ou encore d\u2019\u00e9valuer des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes de diffusion des rumeurs ou des fausses nouvelles.<\/p>\n<p>Ce projet de th\u00e8se visera \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper des formalismes susceptibles de faire le pont entre diff\u00e9rentes approches de la mod\u00e9lisation sociale (th\u00e9orie des jeux, physique statistique, syst\u00e8mes dynamiques, et r\u00e9seaux complexes) en int\u00e9grant de mani\u00e8re multi-niveaux les questions de formation d&#8217;opinion, de valeurs et de normes, intrins\u00e8quement reli\u00e9es \u00e0 la personnalit\u00e9 des acteurs sociaux, et les structures sociales dans lesquelles ils \u00e9voluent (mod\u00e9lis\u00e9es comme des r\u00e9seaux complexes). En particulier, nous proposons d\u2019\u00e9tudier la dynamique de couplage entre les processus de morphogen\u00e8se des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s intrins\u00e8ques aux acteurs sociaux et ceux des r\u00e9seaux d&#8217;interactions qu&#8217;ils forment, par des approches th\u00e9oriques et empiriques.<\/p>\n<p>La personne recrut\u00e9e pour ce projet aura pour mission de d\u00e9velopper des nouveaux formalismes pour l\u2019\u00e9tude de la dynamique d\u2019opinion, \u00e0 l&#8217;interface entre la physique statistique, la th\u00e9orie des jeux, les mod\u00e8les agents, la mod\u00e9lisation des r\u00e9seaux complexes et la science des donn\u00e9es.
