Elle vient de recevoir la m\u00e9daille d&#8217;argent 2022 du CNRS.\u00a0Ses recherches, publi\u00e9es dans des revues internationales, portent sur l&#8217;\u00e9volution sur le long terme des motivations des \u00eatres humains, lorsque ces motivations sont transmises de g\u00e9n\u00e9ration \u00e0 g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, et sujettes \u00e0 la s\u00e9lection naturelle. The ongoing pandemic has driven many inhabitants out of cities and into safer, less crowded areas and poses a real challenge to<br \/>\nauthorities, both in terms of urban planning and policy decisions. There is a need to rethink the role of cities, adapting their infrastructure and dynamics to the &#8216;new normal&#8217;. It is then of paramount importance to tackle the challenges that urban areas face going beyond pure optimisation schemes, keeping a transformative eye. New tools are thus needed, allowing for a realistic forecast of how a change in the current conditions will affect and modify the future scenario.<\/p>\n<p>In this talk, I will present the so-called &#8220;what-if&#8221; machine, a recently proposed platform that provides users with tools to assess the status of urban and inter-urban spaces and conceive new solutions and new scenarios. La cat\u00e9gorisation est \u00e9galement l\u2019une des principales t\u00e2ches auxquelles l\u2019apprentissage machine (apprentissage profond en intelligence artificielle), s\u2019attaque avec succ\u00e8s. Une cons\u00e9quence perceptive caract\u00e9ristique de la cat\u00e9gorisation chez l\u2019homme et les autres animaux, la perception cat\u00e9gorielle, est notamment caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e par une compression intra-cat\u00e9gorielle et une s\u00e9paration inter-cat\u00e9gorielle : deux \u00e9l\u00e9ments, proches dans l\u2019espace des stimuli, sont per\u00e7us plus proches s\u2019ils appartiennent \u00e0 la m\u00eame cat\u00e9gorie que s\u2019ils appartiennent \u00e0 des cat\u00e9gories diff\u00e9rentes.<\/p>\n<p>En utilisant des outils de la th\u00e9orie de l&#8217;information et de l&#8217;inf\u00e9rence statistique, je pr\u00e9senterai des travaux sur la mod\u00e9lisation des bases neurales de la perception cat\u00e9gorielle. Je montrerai ensuite comment ils fournissent des pistes pour l&#8217;analyse de la g\u00e9om\u00e9trie des repr\u00e9sentations internes dans les r\u00e9seaux neuronaux artificiels dans des t\u00e2ches de cat\u00e9gorisation. Un r\u00e9sultat important est l&#8217;analyse de l&#8217;interaction entre la g\u00e9om\u00e9trie neuronale et le bruit au cours de l&#8217;apprentissage. Ces capacit\u00e9s r\u00e9sultent d\u2019interactions assez rudimentaires entre les individus au cours desquelles ces derniers \u00e9changent des informations. Malgr\u00e9 leur simplicit\u00e9, ces interactions permettent \u00e0 des groupes d\u2019individus de traiter collectivement de l&#8217;information et de s\u2019auto-organiser. Sustained by fast-growing connectivity worldwide, these emergent forms of work contribute to the global production networks of the digital economy and specifically, of<br \/>\nthe artificial intelligence industry \u2013 for which they procure data, annotations and quality checks among other things. Platform raise concerns that mostly revolve around precarization and loss of workers\u2019 rights. But the gap between online labour and conventional employment<br \/>\nconceals deeper inequalities among platform workers themselves. They result from interdependencies and the simultaneous interplay of factors such as gender, skills, equipment, architectures, geographies and networks, in highly competitive digital environments. While these algorithmically-controlled settings leave little scope for formal labour organization, informal interactions and adaptive learning in small groups bring about forms of local solidarity and shared tactics of covert resistance. In 2015, the World Economic Forum in Davos identified deepening income inequality as the number one challenge of our time. Yet some inequality is inevitable, even desirable and necessary, for capitalist societies to function productively. Since different people have different skills and capacities for work, they make different contributions to society, some more, others less. Therefore, it is only fair that those who contribute more earn more.<\/p>\n<p>But how much more? In other words, at the risk of sounding oxymoronic, what is the fairest inequality of income? This critical question is at the heart of the inequality debate. The debate is not so much about inequality per se as it is about fairness. This central question about fair inequality has remained unanswered in economics and in political philosophy for over two centuries. Mainstream economics has offered little guidance on fairness and the ideal distribution of income in a free-market society.<\/p>\n<p>Political philosophy, meanwhile, has much to say about fairness yet relies on qualitative theories, such as the ones by Rawls and by Nozick, which cannot be verified by empirical data. In a recent book, I have proposed a normative theory, an unorthodox transdisciplinary theory that integrates foundational principles from disparate disciplines into a unified conceptual and mathematical framework that includes the key perspectives on this question \u2013 the perspectives of political philosophy, economics, game theory, statistical mechanics, information theory, and systems engineering.
