Plusieurs exemples de syst\u00e8mes complexes\u2014depuis\u00a0la r\u00e9gulation du flux des r\u00e9seaux m\u00e9taboliques et cellulaires jusqu&#8217;au comportement d\u2019une nu\u00e9e d\u2019oiseaux\u2014\u00a0pr\u00e9sentent une sensibilit\u00e9 importante \u00e0 des perturbations infinit\u00e9simales.\u00a0Ils sont\u00a0alors dits\u00a0<em>marginalement stables<\/em>, tout juste \u00e0 la limite de leur stabilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Dans mon expos\u00e9, j\u2019aborderai\u00a0le probl\u00e8me de la complexit\u00e9 \u00e9cologique en prenant comme point de d\u00e9part un mod\u00e8le\u00a0de Lotka-Volterra avec des interactions al\u00e9atoires entre les esp\u00e8ces. Je d\u00e9voilerai une structure tr\u00e8s riche et hi\u00e9rarchique des \u00e9quilibres\u00a0possibles entre les esp\u00e8ces. Je relierai les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s critiques \u00e9mergentes ainsi qu&#8217;une dynamique de relaxation de plus en plus lente \u00e0 l&#8217;apparition de phases d\u00e9sordonn\u00e9es\u00a0similaires \u00e0 celles rencontr\u00e9es dans les syst\u00e8mes vitreux. After a brief venture through Neurosciences at the Paris Brain Institute, he switched back to Linguistics with the statistical analysis of writing bursts, under the supervision of Georgeta Cislaru. For instance, the French immediate past construction venir de + V is associated with a free slot that can host a variety of verbs (e.g. venir de manger). This defines a paradigm of linguistic forms that can fill the schema of the complex construction.<\/p>\n<p>It has been posited, and empirically confirmed, that this paradigm of forms obeys a Zipf\u2019s law, specific to the construction (Goldberg et al. 2004, Ellis et al. 2014). On the other hand, such constructions, as they get entrenched in language use, follow in time a clear S-curve of frequency rise (Feltgen et al. 2017). This S-curve pattern is found both for the token frequency of the construction (how much it is used overall), and for its type frequency (how many fillers it can combine with). This shows a level of cohesion over the paradigmatic organization that shapes the construction use.<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent model of vocabulary growth, the Adjacent Possible Model (Tria et al. 2014), we expect the Zipf\u2019s law to hold over time. That is, the highest rank members should appear first, and then their own frequency should increase linearly with the total size of the pool of tokens, so that they should all follow the same S-curve as the construction as a whole. Moreover, the ranking of the Zipf\u2019s law is expected to be conserved after a short fixation time. This contrasts sharply with the picture that emerges from empirical data: the individual frequencies of the fillers follow their own S-curve, with a large variability of slopes and inflection times, leading to an unstable and ever-shifting Zipf ranking. L&#8217;analyse des donn\u00e9es de t\u00e9l\u00e9phonie mobile s&#8217;av\u00e8re \u00eatre un moyen pr\u00e9cieux pour explorer la multitude de ces sch\u00e9mas de mobilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Nous pr\u00e9sentons deux \u00e9tudes portant sur les in\u00e9galit\u00e9s de la mobilit\u00e9 humaine \u00e0 l&#8217;aide des donn\u00e9es de t\u00e9l\u00e9phonie mobile : 1) comment la mobilit\u00e9 est genr\u00e9e dans la vie quotidienne 2) quels ont \u00e9t\u00e9 les moteurs socio-\u00e9conomiques de la mobilit\u00e9 pendant la premi\u00e8re vague de la pand\u00e9mie de COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Notre premi\u00e8re \u00e9tude met en \u00e9vidence une interaction complexe entre les mod\u00e8les de mobilit\u00e9 sexu\u00e9e et les facteurs socio-\u00e9conomiques. Observe-t-on une relation entre la taille des villes et le type d\u2019activit\u00e9s scientifiques qui s\u2019y d\u00e9veloppe ? Ces trois questions, simples en apparence, n\u2019admettent pas de r\u00e9ponses stabilis\u00e9es dans la litt\u00e9rature actuelle.<\/p>\n<p>Cela tient d\u2019abord \u00e0 des diff\u00e9rences de d\u00e9finitions car il convient de s\u2019entendre sur ce que l\u2019on entend par \u00ab activit\u00e9s de recherche \u00bb, et sur les m\u00e9thodes et donn\u00e9es permettant d\u2019en mesurer la r\u00e9partition. Cela s\u2019explique aussi par l\u2019impossibilit\u00e9 de fournir des r\u00e9ponses valables en tout temps, en tous lieux et pour tous types de recherche scientifique d\u2019autant que la g\u00e9ographie de la recherche que l\u2019on observe aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle d\u2019un pays donn\u00e9 r\u00e9sulte de logiques de localisation qui ont pu varier dans le temps et l\u2019espace. La hi\u00e9rarchie urbaine n\u2019\u00e9tant pas non plus stable dans le temps, il s\u2019agit encore de tenir compte de la co\u00e9volution entre g\u00e9ographie de la recherche et g\u00e9ographie urbaine. Enfin, cela t\u00e9moigne d\u2019une communication limit\u00e9e entre historiens, \u00e9conomistes, sociologues, et g\u00e9ographes s\u2019int\u00e9ressant aux activit\u00e9s de recherche \u2013 conduisant \u00e0 des positions apparemment peu conciliables pour comprendre et expliquer les logiques spatiales de ce secteur d\u2019activit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>En faisant le point sur la diversit\u00e9 des savoirs existants sur ce sujet, en travaillant \u00e0 d\u00e9cortiquer les termes utilis\u00e9s et en prenant pour terrains d\u2019\u00e9tude le cas des syst\u00e8mes de recherche contemporains fran\u00e7ais et britanniques, cette pr\u00e9sentation propose d\u2019\u00e9clairer les d\u00e9terminants spatiaux des activit\u00e9s de recherche et les raisons de la surrepr\u00e9sentation de ces activit\u00e9s dans certaines cat\u00e9gories de villes. Il s&#8217;agit par exemple de la disruption des relations \u00e9cosyst\u00e9miques par le changement climatique ou des perturbateurs endocriniens, endocrine disruptors en anglais. Such a process, which operates through a reduction of the set of possible states of the world, converges to a commonly known posterior belief, which can be interpreted as a dynamic foundation for Aumann\u2019s agreement result. Certainly, if two individuals have diverging interests, truthfully reporting one\u2019s Bayesian updated belief at every step might not be optimal. This observation could lead to the intuition that always truthfully reporting one\u2019s Bayesian updated belief were the best that two individuals could do if they had perfectly coinciding interests and these were in line with coming to know the truth. This article provides an example which shows this intuition to be wrong. In this example, at some step of the process, one individual has an incentive to deviate from truthfully reporting his Bayesian updated belief. However, not in order to hide the truth, but to help it come out at the end: to prevent the process from settling into a commonly known belief the \u2013 \u2018Aumann conditions\u2019 \u2013 on a certain subset of the set of possible states of the world (in which the process then would be blocked), and this way make it converge to a subset of the set of possible states of the world on which it will be commonly known whether the event in question has occurred or not. The strategic movement described in this example is similar to a conversational implicature: the correct interpretation of the deviation from truthfully reporting the Bayesian updated belief thrives on it being common knowledge that the announced probability cannot possibly be the speaker\u2019s Bayesian updated belief at this step. One may argue that one of the achievements of the Complex Systems community is to provide a platform for multidisciplinary approaches, not only within mathematical and natural sciences on the one side, and human and social sciences on the other side, but, most importantly, across the traditional divide that separates, and sometimes opposes, these two sides. In particular, Complex Systems have been instrumental in fostering a renewed scientific conversation between disciplines. Thanks to this conversation, joint works across disciplinary boundaries are made possible, rather than unilateral applications of methods from one field to questions stemming from another field.<\/div>\n<div>In this talk, time permitting, I will give two examples of such multidisciplinary approaches:<\/div>\n<div>i) Complex networks to detect discriminations in a historical process: the case of post-WW2 purges. This is joint work with historian Karine Le Bail (CRAL, CNRS\/EHESS)<\/div>\n<div>ii) Stochastic and agent-based modelling to explore the transmission (and loss!) of manuscripts through the Middle Ages. Pour faire une analyse pr\u00e9cise et quantifiable de leur influence, on est amen\u00e9 \u00e0 formaliser le concept de diversit\u00e9 et \u00e0 clarifier les diff\u00e9rentes acceptions du terme.<\/p>\n<p>Du point de vue de l&#8217;informatique, il s&#8217;agit de proposer des d\u00e9finitions rigoureuses qui soient suffisamment expressives pour rendre compte de diff\u00e9rentes signications. Pour \u00eatre pratiquement utilisables sur de grands jeux de donn\u00e9es, elles doivent aussi \u00eatre calculables en des temps raisonnables. D&#8217;origine italienne et originaire de Rome, il a obtenu un master en ing\u00e9nierie informatique \u00e0 l&#8217;Universit\u00e9 Sapienza de Rome (2005), et un doctorat en biophysique trois ans plus tard \u00e0 la m\u00eame universit\u00e9. Combined with neuroimaging, network science has allowed neuroscientists to visualize brain connectivity patterns and quantify their key organizational properties. Within this expanding multidisciplinary field many issues remain open, from how integrating information from multimodal connectivity, to how modeling temporally dynamic brain networks. In this talk, I will introduce novel approaches to address these challenges and discuss the potential impact through a selection of results obtained in human neuroscience.<\/p>\n<p>Dans mon expos\u00e9, j\u2019aborderai\u00a0le probl\u00e8me de la complexit\u00e9 \u00e9cologique en prenant comme point de d\u00e9part un mod\u00e8le\u00a0de Lotka-Volterra avec des interactions al\u00e9atoires entre les esp\u00e8ces. Je d\u00e9voilerai une structure tr\u00e8s riche et hi\u00e9rarchique des \u00e9quilibres\u00a0possibles entre les esp\u00e8ces. Je relierai les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s critiques \u00e9mergentes ainsi qu&#8217;une dynamique de relaxation de plus en plus lente \u00e0 l&#8217;apparition de phases d\u00e9sordonn\u00e9es\u00a0similaires \u00e0 celles rencontr\u00e9es dans les syst\u00e8mes vitreux. La r\u00e9volution des m\u00e9thodes num\u00e9riques n\u2019est pas une question de plus (plus de donn\u00e9es, plus de calcul, plus de quantification\u2026), mais une question de renouveau. Elle r\u00e9side dans la capacit\u00e9 de g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des traces in\u00e9dites, de nouvelles combinaisons analytiques, de nouveaux outils d&#8217;exploration et de visualisation. Pour trop longtemps, l\u2019enqu\u00eate sociale s\u2019est enlis\u00e9e dans l\u2019opposition quali\/quanti qui, malgr\u00e9 sa raison d\u2019\u00eatre historique, a fini par anesth\u00e9sier notre imagination m\u00e9thodologique.
