High performance computing – HPC

The science of complex systems is built every day through the inevitable convergence of issues common to all systems characterized by their so-called complexity. The study of complex systems is a modern challenge notably in data processing terms: complexity is reflected in the quantity of data and their distribution over multiple scales. Because it offers a solution to this massive problem, grid computing and connected servers for storage seems to be an indispensable tool for complex systems research.

Therefore,  ISC-PIF now offers its members a new resource for intensive computation: the computing grid “vo.complex-systems.eu”. This grid makes it possible to perform calculations on many processors at several geographic locations, and thus to benefit from a sharing of computational power.  Thanks to the OpenMOLE midleware developed at ISC-PIF, launching jobs on the grid has become as easy as launching you process on your personal computer, with thousands more computing power.

Grid computing

A Solution for the Whole Community.

 A computing grid that pools thousands of processors enables the processing of very large amounts of data, such as those needed for the reconstruction of dynamic multi-scale modeling and for large-scale simulations. The ISC-PIF aims to become the engine of a vast regional, and ultimately national and international, movement toward the sharing and use of grid computing.

In 2008, the ISC-PIF launched its program of investment into computing resources for intensive computation. A cluster (a server bringing together around 1600 processors) was established under the management of ALL. This cluster was the foundation stone of a more important edifice: the grid “vo.iscpif.fr”. Since late 2011, our virtual organization (VO) is part of the european complex systems grid: “vo.complex-systems.eu”

Shared resources. 

ISC-PIF members can use the grid for their research needs. The first step is to obtain a “computing grid” (“grille de calcul”) certificate from the CNRS and then to use a UI (User Interface) with parameters set to use the “vo.complex-systems.eu” grid. The administrative and technical procedures that you will need to get started on the grid are given on the “Support” page (available via the menu).

Dedicated servers

Zebulon is a 64 core machine with 1To of RAM accessible for all scientists affiliated to ISC-PIF partners with a project in the field of complex systems.

To get access to this machine, you must apply for an LDAP account and then register for the service by selecting “ssh access to HPC facilities ” in the registration form.

This machine is currently unstable due to a lack of maintenance on the part of Serviware/Atos (the supplier of this machine).

Software

The software OpenMOLE, developed at ISC-PIF,  (Open MOdeL Experiment) makes it simple to execute your programs on distributed computing. Learn more.

To get access to this machine, you must apply for ISC-PIF services and then register for the service by selecting “ssh access to HPC facilities ” in the registration form.
