KeyNote : From cultural market to global social dynamics : the impact of large digital infrastructures on individuals and society

The Internet in the 1990s, followed by social networks in the 2000s, held out the promise of greater individual freedom and renewed social relations. But what is the reality today? At a time when some are stressing the importance of online privacy and warning against the dangers of misinformation and opinion manipulation, the time has come to question the impact of social networks on individuals and society.

Are social digital infrastructures compatible with democracy and a healthy cultural evolution ? If so, under what conditions? In the wake of “Toxic Data – How networks manipulate our opinions” (Chavalarias D. 2023 Ed. Champs), this conference will use concrete examples, from cultural markets to online interferences, to examine the impact of online social platforms, from their effects on our lives to their geopolitical implications. And let’s not forget the arrival of a new category of player : artificial intelligence.
