Social media platforms derive their power from conventions: we want to be there because many others are. Academic research, including our, have demonstrated that X/Twitter is being manipulated, even through its algorithm, for economical and political purposes. X has become dangerous for democracies. It’s time to change this convention.

For several years now, we’ve been advocating the switchover of X users from the old generation of social networks based on the exploitation of users’ privacy and their audience, to the new generation of social networks that guarantee certain fundamental freedoms such as data and audience portability and algorithmic pluralism.

Changing a convention globally is a significant event. By definition, no one can do it alone. When Swedes decided to switch the direction of their traffic in 1967, everyone switched on the same day, Dagen H, with the support of authorities.

The inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20, who won the US presidential election largely thanks to Elon Musk’s weaponization of X and the exploitation of personal data, provides a unique opportunity to synchronize at a global level to change convention.

On January 20th, a web service will allow X users willing so, to switch from social network while keeping some if not most of their followers.
