The Nobel Game : insights into our collective discovery processes

“A scientist, let him be a theorist or an experimentalist, proposes some statements and test them step-by-step.” Karl Popper, 1934.

What can we say about the factors influencing collective discovery processes like the development of our scientific knowledge? What is the part of the social game these dynamics? These questions are fundamental when it comes to coordinate research activities or to choose heuristics for one’s own research. They can be however addressed only in the framework of an epistemology, i.e. hypothesis on the nature of knowledge. The Nobel game shows that Popper’s epistemology is well suited for this kind of insight and makes it possible to propose an operational framework for modelling the activity of a scientific community. An analysis of the properties of this framework with tools from mathematics and multi-agents modelling. The online multi-player game offers new opportunities to studies from the experimental point of view the properties of a knowledge discovery process based on the conjecture/refutation principle.
