About the film

Stéphane, Étienne, Simon and Sylvain are always searching. In the laboratory or out in the field, they seek to unravel phenomena such as the song of dunes or the shape of leaves. Rather than focusing on results, equations or principles, this inventive film explores the singular passions that drive the people behind the research. It brings fundamental research down to earth, bringing together dreamlike worlds, playfulness, imagination and pure science.

The filmmakers

Graduates of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, where they studied animation and video, Étienne Chaillou and Mathias Théry seek new narrative forms to explore the questions that continually drive their filmmaking.

Beyond science, they also address social issues such as family and the heated debate surrounding the French law on same-sex marriage in La Sociologue et l’Ourson, as well as the intimate portrait of a young far-right activist in La Cravate. Mathias Théry also directed a portrait of Isaac Asimov for ARTE, highlighting the connections between science, literature and society.
