Memory of stars delves into the inner world of artist Namgoong Whan*, a “entoptic” landscape inhabited by timeless images that reveal the profound connection between the animate and the inanimate. Entoptic phenomena, visual phenomena originating within the eye itself, become for the artist a metaphor for inner light. “It is a reminiscence of the light of the Big Bang, or of the primordial light that shines within us,” he explains. “Painting is a way of bringing this intimate light to the outside.” His work invites us to explore this hidden clarity, a reflection of our connection to the universe.*

The filmmakers

Vincent Schmitt

Vincent Schmitt has worked as a film editor since 2000. He met Jacques Perrin in 2007 and began working in cinema on ambitious projects which, through the richness of their material and their narrative freedom, place editing at the heart of the filmmaking process. His work has been recognised with two César Awards for Best Documentary (Oceans, 2010, and The Velvet Queen, 2021). His curiosity and interest in alternative aesthetics and narrative forms have also led him to direct several music videos and experimental short films.

Namgoong Whan

Namgoong Whan graduated in Fine Arts from Seoul National University in 2000 and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2003. He moved to Paris in 2000, where he continues his artistic practice. In 1998, he discovered one of the origins of art in prehistoric pottery decorated with luminous patterns, which led him to pursue his exploration of the light of the mind — ENTOPTIC — through painting, ceramics, installations, and experimental film works.
