A photo of my brother and me in the orchard, a recording of my grandmother singing, a letter addressed to her one year after her death, her coconut flan recipe: 200 KB of memories stored in DNA, the hard drive of the future. ODAMADO, an imperfect guide to DNA memory.

Author’s note:

This is my graduation film, made in memory of my grandmother Mado, with the intention of learning how to use a new information-storage technology based on synthetic DNA. Some of the files used in the film are now stored as dry powder at the bottom of a metal tube that I carry around in my bag.

The filmmaker

Emilien Dubuc

Born in Bordeaux in 1987, Emilien Dubuc first studied biochemistry in France and then in the Netherlands, focusing on the conditions underlying the emergence of living systems, before turning to photography and filmmaking. After studying at KASK in Ghent, Belgium, and later at Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains, he developed a practice centred on film, image chemistry, and sound reconstruction, at the intersection of scientific and artistic research. His films explore memory and its transmission, information technologies, and biology.
